Hey Guys, we just released a minor update to our Amazon S3 Plugin. The update improves the performance when downloading large files, we scourged the depths of php forums to find the best methods for doing this; as its quite a tricky and messy area of web technology and we believe we have the best solution. I have tested downloading at 1.5gb file with this method and it works beautifully.

This update is 1.1 also contains an updated readme file that contains info on what file types will work. And also guidelines on naming files and products as I have noticed some people can have problem when there file names have special characters.

In the next three to four weeks we are going to release another major update of this plugin that will contain the following features:

support for multiple buckets

built in checks for those problematic special characters

integration into the new download UI, (the download meta box is changing in the next major release of WP e Commerce, so the S3 plugin needs to fit into this )

If anyone has any more idea’s for this plugins improvement, please mention them in the comments below.

Thanks,
Cameron

Hi everyone,

Following yesterday’s release, some of our users have reported bugs that were introduced in 3.8.7.6. It turns out that we messed up with the version control process and released a corrupt package. We are very sorry for the trouble this has caused you. Today we’re releasing 3.8.7.6.1 (quite a version number there) that addresses 3 issues introduced in 3.8.7.6:

PHP Warning for ‘wpsc_load_settings_page’ callback.

PHP Warning in wpsc-transaction_results_functions.php.

get_current_screen() is not available in WP 3.0.

Although the severity of these issues are minor, we’re very sorry to have let this happened.

As usual, before upgrading, please back up your files and database.

Hi everyone!

We’re happy to release WP e-Commerce 3.8.7.6.

This is a mandatory security and bug fix release. Alan Schneider helped us fix a critical security vulnerability that affects all sites running WPEC 3.8.x. Please upgrade your 3.8.x sites to 3.8.7.6 as soon as possible.

Besides the security fix, 3.8.7.6 also includes bug fixes for several issues, most notably compatibility issues with WordPress 3.3. Please refer to our changelog for the list of issues addressed in this release.

We would like to thank Alan Schneider, Lee Willis, James Collins and Ben Huson for contributing to this release.

How to upgrade

If you’re running 3.8.x, simply use WordPress automatic upgrade. If that doesn’t work for you, download the package manually, extract it and upload to
wp-content/plugins
.

As usual, please back up your database and files before attempting the upgrade. That’s something any responsible administrators do before upgrading any plugins or even WordPress core itself.

If the holiday season isn’t about “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” on autorepeat in Trader Joe’s, then its about wrapping up end of year user surveys. Over at GetShopped, we’ve checked in with customers over the years for a quick, “how’s it going” but we’ve never done a real quantitative study of how you really feel.

With as many downloads as we have (2.0 million and counting), and as many users, we know we can’t please everyone but we’re making 2012 “The Year of the User”. To start, we really want to know how you feel about us, about the experience of using WPEC, about the problems you might have had, the successes, how you feel about pricing, support, features, the roadmap and where WPEC is heading. Infact, we want to hear from you whether you’re a user, developer or someone who doesn’t even use WPEC anymore. If you’ve got a complaint, now’s the time to air it. Sure, we want to hear the good stuff, but those items don’t need fixing.

We’re going to take this survey really seriously and use it to help determine where WPEC is headed. You may feel your vote isn’t weighty when it comes to elections, the economic outlook or which came first, the chicken or the egg… but we promise it will be heard here.

As a thank you for filling out the three minute survey, we’re going to throw a few iPods into the pool and send them to three random respondees.

» Take the survey

Hi everyone!

First of all, happy new year! 2012 will be a very exciting year for WPEC users. Some big stuff is coming up for this year, but that’s for another post (we prefer to show you rather than to tell you It’s going to be a pleasant surprise for sure).

Anyways, our friend Alain Schneider helped us plug a Cross Site Scripting (XSS) security hole that’s affecting all 3.8.x and 3.7.8.x installations. The severity of this issue is moderate, so we highly recommend that you upgrade to 3.8.7.5 and 3.7.8.3 respectively (by “highly recommend”, we really mean we’re begging you to upgrade; security issues are no trivial stuff!).

We would also like to thank White Fir Design for organizing the WordPress Security Bug Bounty Program. Most of our recent security fixes came out of that program, and we can’t say enough how grateful we are! It’s impressive that a company is willing to go that far to improve the quality of WordPress open source plugins. But it’s also shocking that such a program is not heavily promoted and talked about by WordPress community. If you’re interested, head over there and participate!

How to upgrade

For 3.8.x users, you can use WordPress’ automatic upgrade feature. Or you can download the package manually, extract it and upload to
wp-content/plugins
.

For 3.7.8.x users, do not use automatic upgrade. Instead, download the 3.7.8.3 package here, extract it and upload to
wp-content/plugins
. It’s important to note that we no longer officially support 3.7.8. We recommend that you upgrade to the latest 3.8.x to enjoy all the new features and bug fixes.

We don’t want to sound like a broken record, but please backup your database and files before upgrading, just in case. In fact, you should not only do this with WP e-Commerce updates, but also with WordPress core or any other plugins’ updates.

I just wanted to give a big shout out to Ash and his team at LightSpeed for helping us get the new WP e-Commerce Plugin documentation up and running.

Ash and his team of savvy WordPress developers helped us get our new documentation site up and running earlier this year. His team helped us by filtering through old documentation and removing outdated pages, they helped us by writing a ton of new documentation, they guided us through choosing a suitable theme, and they helped pick all the Plugins that are running on the site now. It was a massive undertaking for which the entire WP e-Commerce community is grateful.

Ash runs a really tight ship in SA and I am totally in awe of his energy, his passion for WordPress and for being a great team leader. We would have no problem recommending LS to anybody that needs custom WordPress development work.

I also would like to thank Michelle, Cameron, Denise, and Tracey who have also contributed greatly to the developer documentation and the new theme related docs.

You can find the new docs online at docs.getshopped.org, please let us know what you think, in the new year we will spend some more time on the design / UI, and of course we will continue to churn out new content from now until the end of time. If you think we are missing something specific (i.e. a piece of dev documentation / or a theme tutorial) please lets us know here and we’ll look at adding it to the new years list of things to write.

Have a great christmas folks, especially The team at Light Speed Dev, who hopefully will have me back next year to talk about WordPress and Games!

-Dan
