Hello, i am in need of help

I am trying to display the top categories on my homepage ( i have 5 categories and alot of subcategories but i only want to display the 5 main ones )

I have went over the documentation and on the forum, but i am running out of time to get this done.

And i would appreciate really much some help to get this done, or atleast pointed to the right direction
